LOGAN

“Kylie, hi,” Logan said as he got out of his car in the school parking lot on Tuesday morning. “It’s good to see you.”

“It’s about time!” Kylie said half-jokingly with a laugh. “I’ve been standing outside in the cold long enough for the teacher over there to give me the side eye.”

Logan chuckled.

“Well, I’m glad she didn’t give you a hard time. You’re definitely here early today!” Logan said as he threw his backpack over his right shoulder.

“I set my alarm extra early to make sure I got to see you.”

“Aw, that’s nice,” Logan replied, hoping the cold air would cover as the cause of his increasingly red cheeks. “So how was the rest of your night with Clover?”

“Oh, good. She’s so sweet. Last night, she just cuddled up against my legs at the foot of my bed and slept like that all night. She’s been so good. Minus the couple of incidents yesterday, of course, but I think those are to be expected, right?”

“I would think so. I’m sure she’ll have a better day today,” Logan said as he started to mindlessly mess with one of his backpack straps. “How’re you feeling about choir practice tonight?”

“Oh, definitely better. I think today will go well. Hopefully I can show Mrs. Henniker that I’m ready for a solo, but I’ll also be okay if it doesn’t work out. At least that’s what I’m telling myself,” Kylie said with a smile.

“Well, I’m sure you’ll do great.”

The couple was a few steps away from the school’s entrance. Logan stopped playing with his backpack strap and slowed his pace.

“Hey, uh,” Logan started, “have you thought about the upcoming Halloween dance at all?”

Logan clutched his hand into a fist unknowingly.

“No, actually. I honestly forgot that it was even coming up! With the choir concert, Clover, and, well, spending more time with you lately, I guess it fell off my radar.”

“Ha, yeah, well you definitely have a lot of things going on. But… I was wondering… if you’d want to go with me.”

Logan mustered all of his energy to maintain eye contact as he asked. He wasn’t sure he could control the disappointment that would be strewn across his face if she declined.

“Yes,” Kylie replied as she looked back at him with a smile, “of course.”

Logan exhaled and his hands relaxed at his sides.

“I’d really love to,” Kylie continued.

Logan was in awe of how effortless her answer was.

“Would you want to do the whole matching costume thing?” Kylie asked.

“Um, sure. If you want to,” Logan said. “Definitely,” he relayed more reassuringly.

“Okay, great. That would be so much fun. Yay! I’m sure we can come up with a great costume idea.”

Logan watched as Kylie did a small jump and beamed with excitement while his mind went blank. “Yes, for sure,” he replied.

“Oh and hey, are you volunteering tonight?” Kylie asked.

“I am, yeah.” It hadn’t been on Logan’s mind today since Kylie wouldn’t be volunteering with him, but he did still plan on going.

“That’s great. Tell the pups I say hi.
